Rites of passage
As our campers grow, they look forward to the perks that come with age. Rising 5th graders get to stay overnight on Wednesdays, rising 6th graders get to be Aides-in-Training, rising 7th graders get to be aides (DCA/CITs) for the first time, rising 8th graders get the chance to be @’s if they qualify and so desire. But the most coveted transition of all is the year of the Crown – our rising 12th graders in their last summer as a youth. The next summer, as a young adult volunteer, they complete the final assimilation; the girl-to-adult conversion.
camp, unit and site names
we have a lot of fun giving ourselves, our units and our site geeky names. Most of our campers (and some staff and aides) may not know what a buffer, a cable closet or a central cooling unit is – but they know what it means to us!

camp colors
The first two years of camp we used classic technology goddesses colors; pink and purple – although the traditional colors are black and pink with a purple accent. After that we let the camper council select the colors for the following year – until they chose jade and lavender. Then we started a post camp nomination of university colors and voting by staff and aides. We let everyone vote as often as they like, for a limited time. Our staff colors are the inverse of the campers’ colors. We get reusable shopping bags in those colors for the campers to hold their crafts, etc.
geocaching
we’ve been geocaching since camp began in 2005 and most units prepare travel bugs that get left in geocaches to start their stated journeys – some have traveled over 100, 000 miles.
